Arabic Perfume Notes Explained: Oud, Amber, Musk, Rose and Saffron

Arabic and Middle Eastern perfumes are known for rich, warm scents, and a handful of notes appear again and again. Knowing them helps you choose a fragrance you will enjoy before you buy it.

Oud

Oud comes from agarwood, a resinous wood. It smells deep, woody and slightly smoky, sometimes with a sweet or leathery edge. New to it? Read our beginner's guide to oud or browse oud and woody perfumes.

Amber

Amber in perfume is a warm, sweet accord built from resins and vanilla-like notes. It gives many Arabic perfumes their cozy, glowing character. See amber and spice perfumes.

Musk

Musk is soft and skin-like. It often sits in the base to make a scent feel smooth and lasting, and it is common in unisex fragrances.

Rose

Rose appears across Middle Eastern perfumery, from fresh and light to deep and jammy. It is often paired with amber or oud for a richer effect.

Saffron

Saffron adds a warm, slightly leathery spice and often appears with amber and rose.

Vanilla and gourmand notes

Vanilla, caramel and other sweet notes create the dessert-like scents many people love. Browse vanilla and gourmand perfumes.
